Mendalla wrote:I loved this song already before I found this video and this version is just ... wow. It's Amy Lee of Evanesence, the writer and original singer of the song, teamed with a Japanese band and orchestra. I love my music big and dramatic and this live performance is about as big and dramatic as it gets.
And the Japanese lead singer is incredible, too, holding her own with one of the most powerful voices in rock.
That is indeed a most excellent rendition, Scott. I love how wonderfully metal music can be altered to become almost classical. Like you, I also like my music big and dramatic and, though it is not the first time I have posted this piece on an SS forum, it remains one of the most intense pieces of music that never fails to move me. Listen to it LOUD!

The top comment on this video describes Nightwish as follows: "vikings on guitar and bass, jack sparrow on keyboard, a pirate on drums, and a gothic banshee on vocals. this band is great." Amen. (and the "Gothic banshee" in this case is original lead singer Tarja Turunen, though the description fits current lead singer Floor Jansen equally well) The Goddess Dances - Winner - Cheers to 10 Years Flash The Berry Girl - Third place - Summer Word Bank

Mostly Autumn. A very talented band from York, England who have shunned the major record labels in favour of producing and recording their own material in their own way. This track features the Uilleann Pipes played by Troy Donockley (Nightwish).

As mentioned in another thread, Marko Hietala of Nightwish has quit the music industry. Anna posted his letter explaining the decision in that other thread. Marko is an amazing multitalented performer, playing bass and guitar, singing, and composing. "The Islander" is one of his own compositions for Nightwish. And about a year ago, Marko put out a solo album (his first, IIRC). This is from that album. "They told us that we are dust, but we are ashes of the stars." The guy's a heck of a lyricist, too. The Goddess Dances - Winner - Cheers to 10 Years Flash The Berry Girl - Third place - Summer Word Bank

Back to Nightwish. Marko joined in 2001, already an established figure in the European metal scene. He's in his fifties and started his first band with his brother back in the eighties. This song was co-written by Marko and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen (who writes the majority of the band's music) for a movie soundtrack. I love this live version with Nightwish's current lead singer Floor Jansen on harmonies. The Goddess Dances - Winner - Cheers to 10 Years Flash The Berry Girl - Third place - Summer Word Bank

Speaking of Floor... I'm not that familiar with Lara Fabian's work (something I have long meant to rectify), but that song in Floor's hands ... magnifico! The Goddess Dances - Winner - Cheers to 10 Years Flash The Berry Girl - Third place - Summer Word Bank

...and speaking of Adagio... I have only just discovered this. It is from the 1975 Renaissance album, Turn of the Cards. My all time favourite song is Northern Lights from the Song for all Seasons album. A friend at the time told me that if I liked that album then I wouldn't like their others. Oh, how I wish I hadn't taken notice of him! If only YouTube had been invented then... Annie Haslam had the most incredibly beautiful voice.

Any resemblance to Nightwish is not coincidental. The Dark Element is cut from the same cloth of Nordic symphonic metal and lead singer Anette Olzon fronted Nightwish from 2007 to 2012. The Goddess Dances - Winner - Cheers to 10 Years Flash The Berry Girl - Third place - Summer Word Bank
