Today I discovered a new, to me at least, form of 'poetry'.
Haiku.

I would like to use the following as an example:

"Those girls enjoyed the
feel of the cool water on
their uncovered skin."

I stress that this is an example and what I am about to ask is not aimed at this particular piece but at 'Haiku' in general but...
I don't get it!
These thirteen words are a statement and I really don't see the poetry in it.
Am I missing something here?
Can someone enlighten me perhaps?

Hi Anna, this link will take you to a very good article on the haiku form. I've known haiku as a form since I was in high school, long ago, but discovered so much about it from this essay

I think you'll find some answers to your questions, and yes, what you quoted is more of a statement than a poem. I'm short of time at the moment and using a small screen so can't go further into the subject, but it's good you raised it.

I invite you to try again. I am by no stretch good ad Haiku, but my feeble attempts have made me think about saying two things at once, letting the reader fill in their own details, hinting at deeper truth without having to come out and say it, and double interpretations. It is meant to challenge you.

Brevity is often clarity.
