Have you ever seen a painting that makes you stop and stare? Maybe in a gallery window, at an exhibition or at a friends house? Did it draw you in, make you feel the atmosphere it represented? Maybe you just had to have it, even as a print?
Do you have a favourite artist whose you can pick out from the crowd?

I'm a little baffled by your question, Anna. You were asking for paintings that move a person. This painting has been noted as one of the most moving paintings ever created. One may agree or disagree with that assessment, I suppose. But, to me, it always makes me want to cry, to see the painting and to think of lthe horror that Picasso was commemorating.

No problem, Larry. I'm afraid I've never been a fan of Picasso. Although I can see the point of his paintings I really don't like them so I tend to see them in a different light than those who do.

The Accolade - Edmund Blair Leighton

From the moment I saw this in an art shop, I had to have it. It drew me in immediately and now it has pride of place in my entrance hall with a candle sconce either side.

Guernica makes me cry every time I see an image of it. Even for those who are not fans of 'modern' art, it sums up the pitiless destruction of modern warfare on a civilian population on the cusp of WW2. Heartbreaking and still so relevant.

One of the greatest things about 'The Arts', Painting, Literature, Music, in my mind, is the sheer range of emotions it can produce. I look at this painting by Picasso and do not feel the same emotions but, by the same token, I can lose myself in a piece of music that others may find extremely irritating. I might rave over a book which some may find totally boring.
So, love it or loathe it, art is very personal and, as such, is to be encouraged.

The Singing Butler by Jack Vettriano.

One of my favourite paintings by one of my favourite Artists. It hangs in my studio and lifts my spirits whenever I look at it. I can stare at it for hours. :-)

Starry Night - Vincent Van Gogh
The shear vigour and vision of the painting, particularly when you know Van Gogh’s story, is extraordinary. I saw it at a special exhibition of Van Gogh’s entire output at a the Hayward Gallery on London’s South Bank in 1967.

Portrait Of An Old Man With A Young Boy - Domenico Ghirlandaio
Everyone rushes through the Renaissance Italian Gallery at The Louvre to see (and take selfies with) The Mona Lisa, missing so many wonderful paintings including this gem of a masterpiece. For its time it is a revolutionary painting in the way it shows the emotional bond between the subjects, probably grandfather and grandson.

Water Lily Pond And Japanese Bridge - Claude Monet
The series of Monet’s paintings of the water lily pond in his garden at Giverny are displayed around the rooms of two large oval rooms in a special gallery in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris. I have been several times just to sit and contemplate and I have also visited Giverny on four occasions at different times of the year - and walked over the bridge.

Tension at Dawn by Simon Combes.
I have studied this painting and others of Simons for hours. He inspired me to paint wildlife. Luckily for me, I was able to ask him anything I wanted to about his paintings, he was my mentor and close friend until his tragic and untimely death.
I am proud to own an original sketch of his that did specially as a wedding present for my husband and I.

Almost anything by J M W Turner. I was fortunate many years ago to see a major exhibition of his paintings including the full series of watercolours of Venice. No one speaks about light in the way he does.

A Painting by Caroline Jenkins from Twitter. Although not the kind of art I would be likely to hang at home, when I first saw this it drew me in. The atmosphere of the hot sun on the Spanish houses made me feel as though I was there and invoked certain memories of similar days in other places. In my humble opinion, Caroline has an eye for colour and her work really evokes the aura of what she is trying to portray.

Salvidor Dali who I go ape over.

I saw this on a school trip to Scotland; Glasgow Art Gallery. It still haunts me in the most wonderful way.

Dali painted some weird stuff but I always love what he does, especially the soft watches.



I don't like them enough to hang on a wall but the artwork is wonderful.
