Do you ever wonder how to include numbers in your story, such as a character's age? This article helps explain when to use the number itself and when to spell it out in words.

In journalism, if it's an explanation, you can use numbers, or those from zero to nine. Ten and above, write out.

The article makes some valid points. Aside from rule six, when writers of stories break those rules, I cringe when the other five rules are broken.

A rule of thumb I use is to write the numbers out in words.

Numbers typed (1,2,3 etc) looks sloppy to me in literature unless the motivation is to include numbers throughout the piece. It kind of goes the same way of text speak on a forum. I don't think it should be used unless it is correspondence made in private or some sort of note taking exercise not meant to be presented formally.
