The Barber Shop by Katerina Anghelaki-Rooke

The Guardian Poem of the Week, The Barber Shop.

This poem, by a Greek poet who is unknown to me (so far!), took me aback, and I really like it. The analysis of it in the accompanying article is excellent, I highly recommend reading it.

The subject who is truly loyal to the Chief Magistrate will neither advise nor submit to arbitrary measures. Junius

The poem is thought-provoking, beautiful and haunting — and translation is an art form unto itself. The analysis does help with interpretation.
