Has there ever been a consideration of updating the badges here on StoriesSpace to reflect reality? For instance, instead of needing 30,000 views to achieve a Famous story might the threshold be something more realistic for this site? Perhaps 2,500 or so? And might we also consider changing the other badges to show the same reality? It's just a thought. I wasn't aware if that had ever been considered before. The way it is now I would think some badges may never be achieved.

Does anyone have an opinion?

I would agree to an extent. Since my stories are counted in the hundreds, even 2500 would be an unlikely achievement. laughing8

I've never been a big advocate for badges, rating, and/or awards based on numerical significance. It tends to become a cliquish quid pro quo process. However, I think Larry has a good idea in that since the system is already in place, the bar should be set at a reasonable height so that more rather than less members could achieve it.

I would think that 1000 views would get a badge. Therafter, 2500, 5000, 10,000, etc. A system of colored stars could be assigned to a badge as each level is obtained, ie, 5000 views could be a badge with a red star, signifying 6000 views.

One other opportunity for the site... there appears to be quite a wide margin to the right of our avatars in the forums. Perhaps our badges could be shown there as well so that other members could have a quick reference to the achievements of others.

Anything that might boost traffic, story reads/comments and submissions would, imo, be a goodness.

I agree that it would be a good idea to lower the number on the "famous" badges.

I joined Lush because of the competitions. I also wanted to explore writing, and continue to improve it.

I would love to see the competitions returned here. If so, I think traffic would increase, but I agree with
the suggestion, requirements for badges should be adjusted.

We have less that 3000 members. Our viewed numbers are in the hundreds, as previously mentioned.

Modify the numbers, re-introduce the competitions, and we will see both an increase in membership,
but also views.

My suggestion would concern just these badges, really. This is my suggestion. For the following badges make them 10 percent of the ones on red.

Famous story: 3,000 views.
Legendary story: 10,000 views
Famous Member: 10,000 views
Famous Vocalist: 5,000 listens
Millionaire's Club (Change to "Viewers' Club"): 100,000 views

Considering the most views I have of any poem or story is 277, I'll never be famous. Boo hoo!

LOL.
Dude, you forgot to mention the bi-monthly competitions. laughing8

I do think since there is such interest in comps on Lush, we may get more cross-over
from there, if SS started having comps again. Sorry to harp on this. I think it is that important
that is should be considered. I'm certain there are things like mods and judges, etc. to consider.

I'm not sure what the correct breakdown should be. It's a tough one to determine.

But considering only 9 stories and poems have exceeded 10,000 views, and only 43 have
exceeded 3000 views, given the current viewing numbers of this site, the numbers still
seem too high.

I wish there were ways we could better direct traffic here, creating new members and
higher views. Different thread I suppose, but I think both topics are related. d'oh!

Dont say that ping, my stories didnt get over 1000 views until after a few years after posting them when I first joined. They'll get up there, dont worry.

For the rest of the post, yes I fully agree, some badges I feel like only a few people could have achieved.

Because I can,
because I want to,
And because who are you to tell me otherwise?

I agree with all of this. The famous story level of 30,000 is actually less than 10% of Lush's members. By the same token, that would equate to around 250 here. Ok, that sounds a little low since I have achieved that on some stories so how about 350 - 400?

I also believe competitions would help (but maybe not judged in the same way as Lush? hiding )
I like this site too. There are some great authors here and it very much deserves to be promoted.

One other 'badge' that could use a reality check is 'Profile Views'. To qualify for that one, your profile must have at least 100,000 views. Me, I'm only 95,000 short.

And while I'm in mid-bloviation, has anyone else been putting up with unreliable email notification of comments on their stories? The problem might just be me but please let me know if you're in the same boat. In a few days, I'll PM Gav with the problem.

Thanks, Bill. I just sent my little list to Nicola. I hope she is in agreement, too.

I don't write for badges and those that do are kidding themselves. I write for my own personal rewards. Badges are for collectors and it's not healthy. Everyone should be equal and not wear badges (crowns) of entitlement. When are enough badges enough? A badge does not make the person, but it sure muddles the waters.

Bumping Larry's proposal yet again since nothing seems to have happened in the past year. These may actually be too high, to be honest (perhaps 2500 and 5000 for famous and legendary story), but they're a good start IMHO. My oldest story on her is barely over 500 views but I have stories elsewhere that are proportionately similarly view-challenged so that's not unusual for me. Famous Story seems to be a difficult ladder for me to climb.

Featured Story:
Night of the Wind - (Fantasy) A mysterious traveller, a strange storm, a chaotic night for a small town.

Other works:
Spooky People - (Poetry) A playful verse for Hallowe'en.
On Seeing the Light (Re)born - (Poetry) A reflection on seeing the sun rise while on vacation
Voice of Ice - (Horror) A powerful winter storm leads a professor to a disturbing discovery

Numbers are for mathematicians and collectors. Don't get caught up in a numbers race. A badge will turn yellow, but your words will last forever. Don't be fooled by a badge.

Thanks for bumping this, Scott. I sent this list I created to the owner of this site a year ago. I have no idea if she ever noticed it. But I do think these numbers reflect the number of members we have on our site here. It's interesting to see there is actually one member here with a Legendary Story badge with 187,674 views on her only posted story. geek

I think badges are fine and might encourage more participation by members, but the standards required to achieve the badges need to be reasonable and not exclusive to only a few members.

There is a small cluster of members here who could write a poem about bat guano and get 20 votes and hundreds of views simply because they have a quid pro quo troop of followers.

The average member, of which I include myself, plods along 8 votes at a time, just hoping to get on the front page. Badges are well out of reach for the majority of our members. That's like standing at the candy counter with a nickel and everything cost ten cents.

I would suggest a "Badge Friendly" method rather than a "Badge Hopeless" method that benefits all members.

Famous Story: 1000 views
Legendary Story: 3000 views
Famous Member: 7500 views
Legendary Member: 10,000 views
Famous Vocalist: 1000 listens
Legendary Vocalist: 5000 listens
Millionaires Club: 50,000 views
Billionaires Club: 100,000 views

When a site becomes all about badges. Its loses legitimacy. It becomes a club for a few. SS should be about writing and not bragging. People seem to lose sight as to what SS is. Do you want writing or glitter? All that glitters, is usually man-made by personal opinions and wafts of deceit.

This site is not at all just about badges, far from it. It always takes me aback when that sort of statement arises.

Badges and the like are, it seems to me, encouraging acknowledgments, should one care to consider them that way.

Should anyone seek to acquire a badge for a certain number of stories posted, or for having a story in each possible category, so what? If those writers are spurred on to create for those reasons, and do so, and post good work, good for them. If it also means that by doing so they have expanded and improved upon their writing styles, capacity, expertise, then well done, so much the better.

SS is about writing. Where is the bragging? I have some badges, as do all of us. If there were none at all, I wouldn't care either. But if people wish to fine tune the criteria for them, and it does not concern you or me, well, what of it?

I am not going to lose sleep over it, nor will it hinder or help me with the stories I am struggling to write.

No one is suggesting it become all about badges, but we are suggesting that if we are going to have them, then the standards for them should be reasonable.
